Hi,

As a matter of interest. When VO was first introduced, pressing ctrl once
paused VO speech, then pressing a second time would restart speech. Performing
a quick double-press of the ctrl would stop speech. I’m pretty sure that the
double-press action has been deprecated. So, I’m guessing that the single
press action will pause speech. If you do something else with VO after the
pause, then it will not be restarted with the second press of the ctrl key.

Regarding Dave’s comment about having to press it a number of times. I believe
that has to do with buffering of speakable content. If you are using Alex,
this buffering is especially noticeable. Alex is a special voice to the Mac in
that it purposely buffers content in order to analyze the content to come up
with the most natural way to read this content. That’s why you’ll hear Alex
pause and take a breath at strategic places when reading long passages. As far
as I’m aware, other voices don’t have this degree of buffering for analysis.

Later…
