I wonder if you have Group and/or sorting enabled for the desktop. You should 
be able to check by pulling up the contextual menu. There should be a check box 
next to grouping if it is enabled. 
II expect you at least want to turn off grouping, and If you like icons on your 
desktop where you place them then turn off any sort options too.
