First, I thought of one simple possibility. Most routers have a port 
specifically designed for connecting to another hub or router if you try to 
connect a computer to that port it will not work. Try  attaching your MAC to a 
different connector on the router and see if that helps.
If that does not help, then without knowing the make model of the router no 
additional help can occur. 
If your ISP provided the router than they should be able to help.
