BigSir  has done things in a different way from all earlier os's. The main 
system is a snapshot that is readonly and very hard protected. If you look at 
Macintosh HD< you should see two volumes within it, one the system volume and 
the other data. I expect you can only change the data one. Also, you might want 
to temporarily turn off System Integrity Protection. Do some googling. Or you 
might just want to create a new user if it is user settings that are causing 
issues.
The other option I can think of is to use a USB or connected external drive 
with a BigSir installer on it. I have actually been able to boot my a Macintosh 
from a time machine drive to do major work, but that was with Catalina, so 
things might have changed.
