Phil,
Don’t know if you can purchase and install Excel by itself. I signed up for the
annual Microsoft Office 365.

There are pros and cons with each, Numbers and Excel. With Numbers you can
assign column and row headers that will speak as you navigate, but you cannot
jump quickly from one populated cell to another one further away. It’s just
tap, tap, tap, ad infinitum.
Excel does not give you speaking column and row headers, but moving rapidly
from top to bottom or from one populated cel to the next is simple with the
CMD+arrow keys.
Those are two very important differences in navigating a sheet, and I sure wish
there was a JAWS equivalent capability to assign highlights so that Excel could
be easier to use.
Another Excel problem for me is trying to figure out how to get into the actual
sheet. The sheet navigator does not seem intuitive, even after several forays
into the app.
Numbers also has its own quirky7 entry into a sheet, since it uses tables
inside sheets and you have to learn to start thinking in those terms in order
to get around.
I’m beginning to lean more toward Excel, since at least most of the original
hot keys and function keys all work the same as in a Windows environment, even
if VO tends to get confused or lag behind in reporting what’s going on.
