It seems you need to be logged in via a different account (with administrative
privileges) to make the changes. This is easily done, of course, by creating a
second account.

Hi Janina,

Glad to hear you’ve received your new Mac mini and are getting things setup the
way you like. I know it is quite a process with what seems like a million
little settings that you only deal with when setting up a new machine, and then
forget about.

As for changing/modifying your user account name and details, try the following:

1. Go to System Preferences > User Accounts, and select the lock to make
changes.

2. Select your User Account from the list of User Accounts and Groups.

3. Use VO + SHIFT + M to open the Shortcut Menu and select Advanced.

4. Here you can change or modify your account details including your user name
and home directory folder name/location.

Note: You will need to go into a Finder window to manually change the name of
your existing Home folder to continue using it with a new name as opposed to
creating a new folder.

Thanks for the pointer, Andrew. I was there before, but didn't realize I

Got it now!

However, here's a somewhat bigger concern. The setup wizzard
concatinated my name to create the user account. Perhaps there was a
screen where I could have changed that, but I blithely powered through
it.

Now I need to undo that. It does matter because it complicates ssh and
similar cross machine activity.

Can I change my login name, and have it rename my default user folder
plus whatever else it databases on that identity?

Or should I create a new account the way I want it, assign admin to it
and then delete the old account I don't want?

Not sure which is best path forward here.

Best,

Janina,

If you go to system preferences and users, and choose logging options, one of
the choices is to enable voiceover on login screen. This should solve your
problem of not having speech when logging in.

By the way, I hadn’t responded to your last message when discussing OT Linux
because I couldn’t identify your off-list email address anywhere and of course
I didn’t want to continue on list.

Good luck with your mini.

It's not surprising, but still somewhat annoying all the things I've
forgotten about configuring the OS X environment to my liking. I've
forgotten, of course, because I've only done it once before in my life,
about six years ago. I'm referring to the kinds of tasks you do once and
not again until you get your next machine.

Yes, I'm stuck on one in particular at the moment that's driving me
crazy. I like my apps (and files) in list mode, alphabetized. List is
checked, but I seem to be actually getting columns, i.e. moving down
arrow jumbles the alphabet.

Not quite as annoying, but still a nuisance every time I have to reboot
for some reason is that I haven't succeeded making Voice Over on by
default at login. I have to do the Command+F5 thing every time. Of
course, I'm now rebooting less and less, but this is still an annoyance.

All else is slowly getting there. All the help on this list was very
helpful indeed. A few notes:

The Mini did not come up talking, perhaps because I'd utilized the
headphone jack with a cable to my desktop Mackie 1202 audio mixer?
Whatever the reason, I had to manually do Commend+F5 to get the offer of
Voice Over tutorial, and then the default setup process.
The magic keyboard and magic mouse were identified without issue, except
that the Mini complains if I turn the mouse off. I'd like it not to
complain if it can't find a mouse. Sheesh!

The Mini seems to have no issue identifying and using my Alexa enabled
2019 vintage Insignia TV as a monitor. I gave it the last of my 3 hdmi
ports. We'll see whether it complains when I switch away from that
port--haven't done that yet in the office, but I typically have this TV
muted, but on a news channel that I can quickly unmute with its remote
control.

Unplugging the headphone does NOT auto switch to the builtin speaker. I
wish it could. If I go to Sound under System Preferences, I can enable
the builtin speaker and I would agree it's good enough for Voice Over,
but not for music--as previously debated when I asked here.

Oh, and miracle of miracles, I was able to restore the boot chime as
posted on this list a little while ago!

sudo nvram StartupMute=%00

So far, not too bad, actually. I've yet to see the power of this machine
in action, but I didn't expect that just yet in the process.

Thanks again to everyone who encouraged and provided tips. You're the
best!

Best,

Janina

Janina,

The Mac mini’s power button is on the right rear corner. You should have no
trouble finding it.

I use an older Mac USB keyboard from 2006 on my mini, but my wife has a newer
version on her iMac with the same layout as the newer full-size bluetooth
keyboards.
The Qwerty area is pretty much the same as on your MB Air, with a few
exceptions:
1. The Fn key is relocated to the upper left corner of the “six pack” extended
key area, where the Insert key is normally located.
2. There are 3 keys on either side of the spacebar, so you get a second CTRL
key.
3. the Eject key is located to the right of the F12 key, same as on the MB
Air's keyboard.
4. There are additional F-keys located above the six-pack area and the NumPad
area. I have never found a use for these keys.

You can of course turn on VO’s keyboard help to explore the keyboard.
If you connect the USB keyboard to the Mac mini with the included USB to
Lightning cable, it will automatically pair. Same is true for a bluetooth
mouse.

Frankly, I have the same question about the Mini itself. I'm wondering
whether I'll guess it's various ports. I imagine I'l get most of them,
but there may still be some uncertainty. For instance, how does one turn
it on?

When I got my Airbook back in 2014 I literally had to call a Mac using
friend to say: "How do you turn this thing on?"

It also took me a bit to figure out how the power supply came apart and
then back together in particular combinations.

Apple builds awesome hardware, but sometimes these details can be
unclear to the uninitiated.

PS: Delivery is scheduled for next Friday, April 3. I've got my fingers

To clarify, you are using a 2018 Mac mini without a monitor. Are you using a
DVI or VGA to HDMI adapter plugged into the HDMI port to simulate the presents
of a monitor?
I have been under the belief that either a monitor must be connected to a Mac
mini, or an adapter must be plugged into the HDMI port to simulate the presents
of a monitor. I have been told this was the case on 2012 and 2014 minis.
Perhaps this is no longer the case with the 2018 model.
