Hello James, Here are a few things you could try.
First, use your Snow Leopard install disc to do a disk repair. If necessary, rerun it several times. Next, how full is your HD? You need 10% free for your Mac to function properly. You could try applying the 10.6.2 combo updater. Finally, if nothing works, you could reinstall your system and take care just to copy back your data, not your preference files. Yes, I know, a horrible job.
