I checked the activity monitor and when books goes busy, CPU percentage only
goes up to around 10% from a normal of around 2%. I wonder, are there any PLIST
files that could be thrown out that might be causing the sluggishness? Where
are books stored on the Mac? Are they buried deep or are they somewhere where
you can find them?

P.S. I power cycled the computer and then re-open books to the same book, and
the busy message was still there just where it left off, power cycling did
not change anything which tells me it might be something to do with the actual
book itself that’s causing the busy problem. something to do with the state of
the book perhaps as stored in a PLIST file or somesuch equivalent file?
