Well Wikipedia indicatesDigital Speech Standard (DSS) is a proprietary
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proprietary_software> compressed
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_data_compression> digital audio file
format <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_file_format> defined by the
International Voice Association
<https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=International_Voice_Association&action=edit&redlink=1>,
 a co-operative venture by Olympus
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympus_company>, Philips
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philips> and Grundig Business Systems
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grundig_Business_Systems>.
DSS was originally developed in 1994 by Grundig with the University of
Nuremberg. In 1997, the digital speech standard was released, which was based
on the previous codec <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codec>. It is commonly
used on digital dictation <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_dictation>
recorders. Modern psychoacoustical codecs that perform nearly as well at only
slightly higher bitrates have led to this speech coding standard being less
used in modern voice recording equipment.
