Hello Christian, While I understand your request, I must tell you that I and others that I know of, strongly pushed Apple to implement this feature so as to cut down on the number of keystrokes necessary to read mail.

Perhaps this should be a toggle but, quite frankly, I think this is one of the best features of the Mac mail client as it more closely reflects the behavior of sighted users; this is to say, the preview pain is displayed, regardless of the number of lines selected. Obviously, as VoiceOver users, our needs may vary from those of sighted users but, speaking only for myself, I absolutely love the fact that messages are automatically read. Just my opinion, of course.
