Dave,

If you have a router connecti ng your house to your internet service providers 
system and then want to use your scanner connected to another wifi device then 
if you can turn your airport time capsule into an access point and it has usb 
then I personally don't see why that wouldn't work,

The thing you have to be concerned of is the homes connection to the outside 
world, 
So long as that is secure then do what you want with in your home.

My router is firewalled to the outside world but I have a static IP address and 
personal domain name but everything is closed other than my personal vpn 
connection which only connects me to the router and then I rdp to any other 
device / server behind the vpn 

I have 2 other wifi networks within the house that connect to different things 
and one of the access points is an airport express which connects to my printer 
/ scanner.
