I am sorry for scaring you.
It seems that you can change the mail sounds easily.
Its only the empty trash and move to trash sounds that makes you jump through 
hoops.
Again, I am sorry for the confusion.
So try this, I just did it . I pasted in a new .aiff file and it worked. I also 
tried a .m4r file, but it did not work.
While on the Desktop, go to the go Menu.
While pressing the VO keys, press the down arrow to Library.
press VO+Space to choose it.
Now open Library and choose Sounds.
This folder may be empty.
Paste your new mail sound here.
It may need to be in the .aiff format,
