Hi, At what point is it asking to connect to the Internet? Yes, there is a partition on your drive that is the Recovery HD. That is simply the OS for running recovery tasks. When you choose to do an installation, your Mac needs the Internet connection to download the installer and any firmware updates so that the installation can be applied. Internet Recovery uses an OS from Apple's servers to do the same thing if there is no valid Recovery Partition on the internal drive.
