Hello Matt, It's a personal choice.
What I can tell you is that, recently, when attempting to rip a particularly troublesome DVD, the only USB drive that would get the job done was my Apple USB DVD Super Drive. I tried three other modern USB DVD devices and all reported errors. Just saying ...
