Hello, Jurgen, and thank you for your solution, which worked perfectly.
I'm embarrassed by my mistakes, but I'll include them here in case they
help others.   I knew to interact with the paragraph in which the word I
wanted to copy occured, but I pressed Command plus right arrow instead of
VO plus right arrow to find the word, and I pressed Command-C to copy it
instead of VO-SHIFT plus C.   This double error made the operation fail
miserably.   I too often forget about the VO-SHIFT-C command.   I'm rather
surprised that the Apple Accessability rep did not know this sequence
since, as you say, it is fairly simpler
