Orpossibly you have done a three finger double tap on the touch pad to silence vo. I keep doing this some how.

I believe F10 is mute, F11 is volume down and F12 is volume up on most Apple keyboards. Generally I have to use the Fn key with these. Also, in the sounds system settings area is a play tone while adjusting volume setting you should make sure this is checked. BTW. I am still considering your multiple window issue and will probably write up a tutorial on this. But there is an option in System Settings -> General about weather to re-open closed windows when an app launches.
