It was a fun little diversion after spending months sorting out
Windows issues after my laptop quit and trying to get the Windows VM to
take its place. Now if only Duxbury would be helpful, I;d be happy.
Nice though that much progress was made today.

Way to go figuring that out. What I hear is VO saying E, so I figured it was
just announcing the key press and didn't try arrowing left or right. But once
I hear that, you are right, all the accents are there. Cool!

Donna,
Good news. I do not know any foreign languages but run into some of those
characters in my braille reading so made a list of the braille symbols for
reference.
So this got me curious and I found the answer. What Google showed you is
true, its just not Voiceover friendly.
Hold a letter key such as e, you may hear some faint sound effect. Release
the key and press left or right arrow key and you will hear the accent
characters for that letter. Highlight the one you want and press enter.

Hi Tim,
No, that is not what I meant. I read something on Google that suggested that
if I press and hold a key a list of other options would come up. It sounded
similar to how it works on the iPhone. If you press and hold E, you'll get
options for different related keys E acute, E grave, etc. But I have not been
able to reproduce that on my Mac. When I press and hold the E key, nothing
happens.

Hi,
That's odd. Make sure that you've interacted with the editable area so that
you can actually type. The option key reference is not new at all, I'm not
sure why they're saying that it only works on newer Macs since it's been
available since way back in the 90's and probably even into the 80's. Anyway,
you can find lots of interesting characters just by holding down the option key
and pressing letters. For example, press option-4 and you'll get the ¢ sign.
Many of these are quite logical too. That is, shift-4 gives you a $ sign
whereas option-4 gives the ¢ sign. Shift-comma give the less than sign whereas
Option-comma gives the less than or equal to. Open a Pages or TextEdit
document and try them out. Note that this is a built-in thing to the MacOS, so
these combinations will work in any document whether web-based or workstation
based. The only limitation may be specific fonts that may or may not have
every option that another does.

Hi all,
In my quest for the inverted exclamation mark, have been reading that on newer
Macs, if you hold down a key, accented characters for that letter will pop up
as an option. But I have tried this out in both Pages and Text edit with no
luck. Does anyone know how to make this feature work? My Key repeat is
currently set at 60.
Thanks for any help.
Cheers,
Donna
