Good! Did you make that change for the left option key? This is why
I try to keep to a minimum any changes from defaults. I still get
tripped up. Sighs.

Certainly in my El Capitan system with USA English keyboard option 1 produces
the inverted exclamation. I remember you have issues with option characters a
few months back but I don’t remember how you left the keyboard layout.
