The terminal  has a buffer wich stores previous commands for reuse if desired.  
Using arrow up will revisit those commands in reverse order.

This can be cleared by cmd+k and/or cmd+option+k.  The second is more extensive.

There will be a vo announcement of the outcome.
When in terminal from the menu choose terminal, then preferences, then window.

Near the end of the items there are terminal buffer items which can be set by a 
numerical value.  This includes how much memory to devote to
the bufffer and its size limit.

Another related terminal command is to replace the k above with r, this will 
reset the terminal, also with vo feedback..
