The next thing to try is to boot from an external disk that has your current or a slightly newer version of the OS on it. You do occasionally use one of the disk cloning packages to make a copy of your boot disk don’t you? If not, an Apple store do have boot disks at the Genius bar, that have system diagnostics and regular boot images.
