If it is an external drive you can see if it is attached in terminal.
When in terminal do this command: cd /volumes Then do: ls That will produce a list of all attached and internal drives,ex. your internal hard drive by their name. Often an external usb drive will have the name of the manufacture or a drive series it produces.. If it appears in the list one can send files to it in terminal.
