You can do it from office365.com if I remember correctly. I don’t think it’s available via the Mac App Store.
Once you have a subscription that includes the desktop applications (be sure to choose a plan that does contain them), you can log into Office365 via your account, and there’ll be a link to download the applications for various operating systems (Windows, Mac, etc.). Someone who has done this recently should confirm the details.
