I feel a little silly answering this, but there are a few incorrect statements
here and some expansions:

1. FTP is a protocol and has been available in some form on Macintosh computers
since the beginning, ftp the original protocol available since 1985 and
probably earlier was not very secure, the password was transmitted in exactly
as you typed it, there was no encryption available and it had several other
faults. Several of those problems with the protocol were fixed in newer
releases but sftp which is essentially a specialized version of ssh has long
been considered a better solutions for transferring files between two systems
where you don’t need much synchronization and can be used as an underlying
protocol for git.

What is git? It is a way to keep various versions of files around in a
distributed system where one can fairly easily go back to an earlier version.
And yes there are git clients and servers for the Macintosh.

In terms of finder and FTP it is possible or at least it was inTiger to have
the finder open a ftp session but if for any reason the TCP connections that
ftp was using failed, than the finder had a tendency to hang. So Transmit and
several other clients have been created with better fault tolerance (note that
transmit can use ftp which is still insecure or other protocols that are better
secured for privacy). Most of the commercial file transfer clients support
several protocols and therefor e can make them all appear pretty much
equivalent.

I believe that in most cases today when people are asking about ftp they are
really either thinking about sftp or are using a very limited use case, perhaps
uploading a new article to a wordpress site or downloading the archives of
software or documents from sites that want to ensure that the downloads that
are started are supported by the most ancient of file transfer protocols. (FTP
uses port 20, and SMTP the original mail sending protocol uses port 25 so as
you can see FTP has been around a very very long time.
