Well, it could b that the external media got corrupted because you ejected it 
before all the data blocks had been written, or it could just be that the 
computer got confused.

In any case, try real hard to eject your media first. Open finder hit 
command-shift-C to bring up a list of attached devices and find your external 
media and hit command-E. Then you need to wait until the device disappears from 
the list.
