Janet, what you say is right for generic MacOS systems, but there are several add-on clipboard managers that archive most clipboard items. These will not though, for example archive clipboard items added by 1Password because 1Password specifically marks their clipboard as transient and will delete the contents after a couple of minutes to prevent somebody else coming up to your machine and clicking paste to reveal your password.
