I've compared the compact and high quality versions of Alex and cannot
really tell a difference, can anyone else tell a difference?

Well, I'll say this, the process is certainly not intuitive, at least,
not in my opinion.
Were it not for your quick reply to my question, I would never have
thought to look any further than the voice activity table.
To be even more honest, I thought that the label, Alex, Compact, was
some kind of VoiceOver typo. I had no idea that Alex had a compact
version. (smile)

and find the enhanced version of Alex and download it.
