Hi All,

I may have a fix for now. It has worked for me in two different scenarios. In the VO
Utility, under the Web category, make sure that the "Enable Live Regions"
checkbox is not checked. This seems to allow VO to remain speaking for an extended
length of time. During this testing, I had my MBP set that the computer never goes to
sleep, and that the display would go to sleep after one minute. I had it read a long,
boring legal document on school fees and VO read the entire document, then after one
minute of silence, the Login Panel spoke. I also tested it with a rather long
explanation of security, authentication and authorization within the base level of the
MacOS. After about 10 minutes, the Login Panel had not reared its ugly head. Of course,
if you use the Live Regions in web-pages often, this isn't a good fix, but for now, it
has worked for me.

Any others who wish to try this workaround/fix are welcome to do so and post
results here. I realize that just because it worked for me, it does not always
mean that it will work for others in all situations.

That's interesting. People have been experiencing this issue since, at least,

since the majority of Apple Care reps know little about VO sorts of issues.

Both platform types as far as I can tell. I have an SSD on my MBP and it does

feature as far as I can tell. As this activity is engaged, its focus is
gained, so VO announces the new focused app/window. That's normally a good
thing, but in this case, it's a problem.

Just to be clear, installing High Sierra on a spinning drive will default to

Apparently not.

Mary,
Help us. How about a web page (in English) where this
happens. Does it only happen in web pages and emails?

Did you do a clean install or did you upgrade over Sierra?

Hi,

What's happening here is that the authentication layer, which
is invisible to the sighted user, is activating. When your
computer screen is set to sleep after a certain amount of
time, or if it is set to lock after a certain amount of time,
authentication will take over and require a password to allow
someone access to the computer. If you disable this level of
security, it seems that the authentication layer initially
still activates, but it does not lock down your computer.
Because the authentication layer was activated, VO announces
that this window gained focus, and, of course, this
announcement interrupts whatever you're listening to.
extending the time of the screen sleep or scree saver will
reduce the incidence of this announcement.
