I could be very wrong here, but if I remember correctly, whenever a device is mounted in Linux or Unix, at least part of the link is virtual i.e. the directory for the disk does not actually exist except to be referenced by the operating system. Therefore, when the disk is unmounted surely the system will forget about it as it was never actually there?
