Paul, I don't generally mess with calendar entries in Calendar on my work El Capitan since once a co-worker complained that I sent out 50 meeting accepts. But in looking at it right now, what I find best is once the appointment is highlighted, I press command-i (for info) and then I have no difficulty tabbing around and editing fields.
Is this a standard iCloud calendar or another source? Also, is there a specific view / sequence you have been using to view the entry? I noticed when in Month View, interacting did not always tell me anything about individuals appointments on a specific day.
