Hi Simon, It is not a carrier issue. It is a change instituted by Apple. I suspect they received complaints from people because of the automatic connect when the voicemail button was touched.
Visual voice mail is not available in NZ. I started receiving it when I shifted to AU. With visual voice mail, the voice mail message is downloaded onto the iPhone in the background when it is received. Therefore, when touching (double-tapping) the voice mail button, a list of all voice mails comes up onscreen. The messages are on the iPhone, not the carrier's VM. So, one is able to select a voice mail message and listen to it. It is not necessary to go through all messages in order. It is a fabulous service. One can keep messages as long as desired because the messages are on the iPhone, not the carrier's message system.
