Who ever is telling you that you need to replace your router every 2 to 3 years
is smoking crack.

I would say honestly 4 or more is perfectly fine for most. The standards just
don’t change that frequently and there’s not much in them to break over time.
I left my airport in service for 5 years and before that my D-Link router
served me for about 8. I give these to my parents and they lasted them even
longer, my airport is still inservice today at my mother’s providing her new
place lots of coverage and my D-Link is still functional at my fathers going on
12 years now. The reasons to upgrade are if you increase your connection speed
and your existing model won’t cut the mustard or obviously if it breaks. Other
than that it’s not really that beneficial. Sounds like a router salesmen gave
you that advice.
Asus makes some decent gear, good choice. They also use the SMA
connector type so adding better antennas is easy and inexpensive and requires
no tools. You probably have a smaller house so your existing gear will do just
fine. I’m working with almost 5000 SQFT which is hard to cover when you add in
building materials. I’m ordering a plume WiFi distributed system for my place
so I’ll have an AP in each room.

We don’t switch them out even that frequently in the professional world.
