Hi there I agree, give it a couple of days before you make any decisions to take it back or something. Let it run over night if you feel the need, and it should eventually sort itself out. All of this also depends on your Internet speed depending on everything in your iCloud which it would have to download.
This is not the first time I hear about a sluggish Mac or iPhone in the first couple days of ownership. If you already have a external drive connected with time machine set up to back up, might also be the cause, since The initial Time Machine backup will also take some time and use up a lot of resources.
