According to apple accessibility when I spoke to them today, The pods should be active always once connected to the primary device in my case my iPhone 7+ The earpods have been found to not be working with the apple watch as they should so apple requested that submitted as a feedback issue via the beta feedback tool So they have noted a problem but it’s still to be worked on. According to the apple data on line you shouldn’t have to tell the pods that you want the audio to play through them it should just happen straight away.
