Hi, My understanding is that simply extracting the text is not an option as the other parts of the pdf need to remain intact.

I have found instead of preview this free open-source pdf app "skim": http://skim-app.sourceforge.net/ <http://skim-app.sourceforge.net/> In my experience it is better at text capture, and is smaller and more responsive then preview. It also allows for attaching annotation notes in the pdf.
