If you have a program such as nearby explorer, you can set your own point, which would be the door or whatever you were trying to find. And the "Geo beam" feature is very helpful here as well. But the first time you go to the store or the restaurant, of course you won't have set that point. So you would be in the same fix that you would be in if you were using the regular apple maps. The nice thing about these programs is the ability to set these favorites, but of course you have to set them before you can use them. Transit and MoveIt transit services work in my area, and generally my Guide Dog gets me to places I have been before with little difficulty. However when there is a restaurant I read about on yelp, or a specific store I want to visit in a downtown block, I find that maps gets me near the street address, but then finding the door can be quite an adventure. This is especially true in suburban areas where there are large parking lots around an office building. If I got Near By Explorer or BlindSquare would I be more likely to find the entrance I want without assistance? I just read through the list. I have been using Maps primarily for the type of walking you described for a few years now. I also use BlindSquare for the same purpose, but maps is often more accurate. As for POIs, I submitted a business location / name correction a couple months ago, and Apple accepted the correction within a day. Google Maps allows the same sort of data correction submissions. In fact, I enjoy this feature so much so that I am beginning to use the Maps app instead of Seeing Eye GPS or Nearby Explorer, when merely traveling down a street, with no particular destination in mind. There is, however, kind of a drawback in using the Maps app for intersection announcements, as least as far as I am concerned; said drawback being that, in addition to accurately providing intersection information, such as the names of cross streets, Maps also continuously announces points-of-interests as they are passed. For me, this is too much information, especially when traveling in a vehicle as the announcements become somewhat cluttered. My personal preference would be to have intersection/cross street announcements, only. Does anyone know if there is a way to disable POI announcements in Maps? If POI announcements could be disabled, in the scenario I have described above, then the native iOS Maps app could quite easily make it possible for those of us who are visually challenged to enjoy basic GPS navigation without having to incur additional cost by purchasing third-party GPS navigation solutions. I hope that those of you who participate in the iOS beta program will pass this topic and suggestion along to Apple developers.
