I have GoodSync. It’s accessible, and at first it worked pretty well, but then
something went wrong and it doesn’t seem to be working at all. Setup was
overly complicated, and you can’t bypass any part of it or the program won’t
work properly. It doesn’t make that clear while you’re setting it up. I was
unimpressed with my interactions with the support people, so I haven’t gotten
back with them to find out what the current issue is. The Mac version of this
program seems to be almost an afterthought. When you look at their support and
FAQ pages much of the material explains the Windows product and makes no
mention of the Mac version. I do not recommend GoodSync and at some point will
probably be on the hunt again for a better solution that will do what I want
and allow me to automate the process.

Forklift seems to have good synchronization and backup functions but you can’t
automate it directly. The support people there were very helpful with my
question about Voiceover, even giving me a license key to make sure it would
work. If you don’t need to automate, this might work well. When I asked them
about automating they directed me to create what they call a Synklet, basically
it creates a little app that you can execute to perform the function you set
up. Then I was to use the calendar to set up the schedule. I read up on
creating a local calendar so that apps could be run from it, but I couldn’t get
the event to fire.

So, if anyone else has an accessible solution for file backup/synchronization
that can be scheduled and will work while the Mac is power napping it sounds
like more than one of us would like to know about it. I have Time Machine and
Crash Plan running, but I need something that will back up my files by straight
copy so that other machines on my network can access them without needing the
same software. I want my wife to be able to open my backed up files from her
Windows machine.
