Another advantage of over the air digital reception is it isn’t compressed.
Most apartments and condo groups will not put up to much of a fight if you want
to put up an antenna or dish any more. Back when the communications act was
first passed I had an home owners association go to war with me about putting
up an antenna. I was originally going to put up a small 8 element Channel
Master, nothing nuts and in a fixed position since all the towers I wanted to
hit were in the same place in San Francisco. They kept threatening me and
trying to tell me what to do which if you haven’t guessed doesn’t really work
with me and because I was a ham operator I went all PRB1 on them and put up a
100 foot tower with individual beam antennas that required an industrial
rotator. I also put lights on the top and became active in one of the local
civil preparedness groups. I had the outside of my property looking like an
NSA listening post. I also put in a 20 foot dish that I ended up building a
home brew radio telescope out of. I made sure the dish blocked out the sun if
I pointed it correctly to my neighbor’s back yard and pool because he was the
association president. I was going to put solar panels in on top of that which
in California is the only justification you can use to cut down trees and
totally rip out all the landscaping that would have blocked my sun exposure but
they caved first. Ever since that time my property managers have been more
than accommodating of the very little roof space I’ve needed which in the end
accounted for an 18 inch dish and a small panel antenna for fixed wireless.
Good times!
One thing you might look at are some of the better indoor antennas.
You don’t need to mount anything and some come with preamps built in. The good
news with digital signals you don’t need perfect reception like you do with
analog. As long as you’re getting the data stream above the noise level
sufficiently things will work just fine. No ghosting or multi path to worry
about. You might have a small device you put in a window or if you go whole
hog something you sit in your attic and you can use RF splitters to drop the
signal in to your existing dish wiring so you won’t have to pull new wire.
They make some models that strap on to your existing dish install and are
barely visible. Even the good ol rabbit ears will work in many settings. Good
luck
