Ok, so here’s how it should work in your case. Being a verizon phone it should be unlocked so it’s less critical for you. You should be able to swap SIMS assuming Verizon hasn’t changed their policy. If you buy an unlocked phone though you could in fact walk down the hall and set up an account with Verizon and just buy / receive a SIM from them. In the case of verizon though it doesn’t matter so much because they ship phones unlocked.
Let’s take another example that is locked so you see the difference. If you buy an AT&T phone that phone is locked to their network. In order to use another carrier’s SIM in the phone you need to have AT&T unlock the phone for you. This is done by having AT&T update a database where they unlock the phone and then you format the phone and reinstall from iTunes and that process unlocks the physical device. After that process you can slap in any sim you wish. Verizon simplifies the process buy not locking in the first place. Also, in most cases, if you pay for the phone outright you’ll own it and the carrier will unlock it. If there’s a balance on the phone they may not like in the case of T-Mobile they won’t unlock until you pay off the phone. In the end for your use case it’s less important you can go ahead with your plan or buy the phone unlocked from Apple and then put a Verizon SIM in from the Verizon store. Other carriers you have to be more careful. > On Nov 28, 2016, at 10:49 AM, Phil Halton <philh...@gmail.com> wrote: > > I'm a little confused about the locked versus unlocked business.
