Verizon is my carrier. I think as the emergency responders do. Plan plan plan and expect the unexpected.

Hi ET, good question about the towers, depends on the network.

Verizon has both battery backups and generators at their cell sites. Verizon was one
of the only networks available during Katrina for example. AT&T uses battery
backups good for 8 hours but does not have generators. T-Mobile I believe uses both
battery backups and generators at their main sites, Sprint is very hit or miss with no
backup or batteries only. AT&T has a big investment in a thing called cows or
cells on wheels. They can roll a cow to a site that’s diminished or needs more
capacity. You’ll see these a lot of the time during natural disasters or say in the
parking lot of the stadium hosting the world series or some major event. They were for
ever rolling them around San Francisco for a lot of the rock festivals. Verizon has
some of these but fewer as they tend to over engineer the permanent cell site.
Remember in earthquakes other things can break for example fiber trunks or the towers
can fall over. Another thing, all the carriers have generators and battery backups on
their central offices. Cable providers usually have batteries on the cable head ends
and terminals.

Hope that helps.

Scott,
Yes SOS will be very wonderful but what I am wanting is ability to send only
texts to a specified group of contacts to say I am alright. Create the text
ahead of time then pretty much a one button process, something like that.

The Red Cross Earthquake app does this but this function is buried in the app
and in a crisis, it will not be the easiest.

Related to this, how do carriers manage the cell towers when they go on
emergency power? Can it be assumed that texting traffic will move?

Yes you can, in the Beta 10.2 the SOS feature is enabled now just like the
watch. Instead of pressing the button on the watch you press the screen lock
button 5 times now and it sends a message with your location to your contacts
defined under the SOS feature as well as alerts the authorities. So the button
no longer re springs the phone I don’t believe now it’s dedicated to SOS
functions. Download and install the beta 2 of 10.2 to enable this feature.
You define the settings under settings, general, SOS.

Hope that helps.

In light of the 7.8 quake in New Zealand, I am again revisiting my desire to

One idea would be a way of sending a text message already composed to a
specific list of contacts. Is this feasible in iOS 10?
