Horizontal and vertical splitters are lines drawn on the screen to create separate areas. Moving the splitters can make an area wider or narrower, taller or shorter. This can affect the amount of information held in that area. For instance, in Mail, moving a splitter can get rid of the preview pane which certainly affects VoiceOver users as it prevents messages from opening automatically.
