I'll second Tintin++. It's still my client of choice, first on Linux
and on OS X as well. There's already an OS X version compiled on the
webpage at:
http://tintin.sf.net/
But to answer the question anyway, OS X is a POSIX-compliant UNIX os,
certified as such. Essentially you can compile most things just as if
you were on any other UNIX platform. You'll need Xcode install which
brings the gcc and g++ compilers along with all their libraries and
dev tools. Some low-level system calls are a bit different, but most
application software doesn't depend on using them.
