this is why they should have used Micro USB as the standard

standard, I guess it will eventually replace micro USB, will
probably take some getting used to, but at least it will be a
standard. As far as I know, Apple is the only company that uses
nonstandard ports on their devices. Almost every other manufacturer
uses either micro USB or mini USB for their phones, tablets and
other portable devices.

I completely agree Mike. We've headed down a dangerous path where
an open, ubiquitous standard has been replaced in part by a
proprietary port. USB C would have been preferable, although you
can understand that with Apple having invested so much in the
Lightning ecosystem, replacing the jack and the Lightning port
would have been very...courageous.

Even for a third party company to address it, Apple would need to
approve the accessory, this is one reason why they use the
lightning interface instead of standard USB connections. Every
lightning device contains a chip that indicates that it's approved.
If Apple decides they don't like a particular company's product,
they can refuse to provide the chip and the device will not work.
It will be interesting to see if they ever embrace the up coming
standard USB C interface or stick with their proprietary,
nonstandard ways of doing things. That is one of my biggest pet
peeves about Apple.
Original message:
Hi everyone, unfortunately as I predicted in my blog post of
November 2015 and in subsequent posts on this, as has been
confirmed by multiple news sources today, Apple has not released an
adapter that allows you to use your phone and charge it at the same time.
The reaction to this lack of addressing of an important use case
has been fierce even among sighted people. Hopefully if Apple
itself doesn't respond quickly, a third-party manufacturer will
address this use case if the spec permits.
In the mean time, here are a couple of work-arounds. I don't think
these are at all adequate, but if you need to upgrade to an iPhone
7, they might allow you to make do for a bit.
1. Those of you who listened to the recap of the Apple event on The
Blind Side with Jeff Bishop, David Woodbridge and me may have heard
this one already. David pointed out that the Apple Battery Case for
the iPhone will give your phone a recharge, and it contains its own
Lightning port. This means that if you want to use your phone with
wired headphones while charging, you can, by plugging Apple's
supplied Lightning adapter into the case, then your headphones into
the adapter.
Second, Apple sells a Lightning Dock in its store for $49. This
will charge your phone, provide speakers, and it contains a 3.5 mm
headphone jack. If you charge your phone by the bed and just want
to use it there, or perhaps you use it at the office where it's
plugged in, this could work.
Third, a number of manufacturers, such as Griffin, sell a 3.5 to
Bluetooth adapter. This could introduce the dreaded lag inherent in
many Bluetooth audio devices with VO, but I guess the only way
we'll know that is to try them. They may get you by while you get a
quick charge.
These are convoluted solutions for dealing with a use case that is
pretty basic for any decent smartphone, but if wireless earbuds
aren't an option for you, as they are not for me, they seem to be
all we have at present.
