This is not correct. The keypad is not disabled when you are using the earpiece. Once you tilt the phone away from you and hear the speaker come on, simply press the keypad button. It's approximately in the center of the screen, and it's quite large and, of course, is identified by Voiceover. Once you hit that, the keypad becomes available. A headset is not necessary. Obviously, the keypad won't be available when you have the phone held to your ear, think of the issues it would cause if the screen remained active in that state. Remember we're dealing with a capacitive touch screen here, and any contact with your skin can activate it. Disabling it while it is next to your ear is really the only way the system could work.
