Well, that wasn’t such a good start.

I now have an Ion USB-enabled cassette deck (also with 1/8-inch out) and it 
took me three cassettes to realise that there’s faint, but noticeable, EMI.  
I’m going to have to do the recording in the other room, at the very least.  
And I was rather hoping to avoid additional processing (reel-to-reel, plus 
autoreverse, is all automatic) but it looks like I’m going to have to bring out 
the big guns.

So, I guess what I’m saying is: just because it has a USB interface doesn’t 
suddenly make it less susceptible to the rules of physics. :)
