Nothing says you can’t continue to use the 3rd gen, if it meets your needs. Certainly with the decided dearth of apps on the fourth, you might not even notice.
For me, the two noticeable improvements are BBC iPlayer and iCloud Photo Stream (for my mother’s photo collection on her account). Everything else is iTunes. To be fair, apps are a big deal: Plex is now available for Apple TV, although I don’t have a need for that yet. Youtube, LoveFilm and others may well be nice, but they're nothing you don’t already get on your phone or on most smart TVs anyway. You really can’t get away from the fact that exclusive TV continues to be cable or terrestrial, so you’ll probably use your ATV as a supplement, rather than a substitute. And the 4th gen has a learning curve. The new touch remote doesn’t have quite the refinement of the physical click remote of the 3rd IMO, although the latter remains supported (but less well). You need a book [1] just to use the thing properly. The bugs in the software are still being worked out; it only recently got Bluetooth keyboard support and the iOS Remote app. Oh, and HDMI-CEC now works, mostly; a bright spot which means I no longer need to fiddle with switching inputs, but also meaning that if I grip the remote in the wrong place, I’ll switch inputs accidentally. You’d better not be using an optical digital audio receiver, neither, because the port is gone, leaving you with no option but to use HDMI splitters. iTunes is too slow for my Internet connection, so faster Wi-Fi hardly matters to me; I still use 10/100 Ethernet, and that hasn’t changed. It’s up to you, but I personally feel that both products are, themselves, in their own right. My brother stuck with the third, in the end, after a stint with the fourth. Yeah, I agree with him. It meets his needs, takes it off my hands, and is still a truly joyful experience in a way that the 4th has yet to be, IMO.
