I only have to do the steps I mentioned when the program won't shut down with Command q and it's giving you a nonstop busy signal. It will tell you in the box that comes up whether the program is responding or not. If Text Edit is not responding then simply hit return to select it and then reload it. You may get a dialog asking you whether you want to report the problem to Apple, kind of like a reporting error in Windows.
