first, once the headphone jack is gone, it’s gone, it’s not coming back. There’s no need for a headphone jack, the vast majority of users won’t care and the few that do will get over it because there will be lightning to 8th inch and quarter inch adapters I’m sure. There’s way to much to gain by having a digital signal source to think about including a headphone jack. You also have the huge space savings. I know it sounds silly the sizes of jacks but when you’re fighting for millimeters everything counts. Just a few millimeters may be the difference between processing power or radio features or new components not in place yet. (extra camera needs room, etc. I think the days of headphone jacks are numbered once a new standard is formed. Will it be lightning, probably not but I could definitely see some sort of universal port that supports USB / audio / what ever instead of having a port for each function. Maybe USB-C?
