The newer trackpad is more spacious, but for VoiceOver users there’s really no benefit, since there’s no way to exploit the one real feature it has, that being the 3D touch feature. Apple doesn’t seem to have done any work there, unlike on iOS. I’ll be honest, when I got mine, it was more in the name of completeness than necessity, and although I like pairing and charging by Lightning cable, I’d have no real difficulty going back to my old one. Having said that, I do now make quite extensive use of the tactile power switch, where in the past I’d have difficulty telling whether it was on or off. The keyboard is more interesting, because pairing can be done non-interactively over USB. Both devices can also use USB with Bluetooth off, which effectively means that they are USB keyboards/trackpads when not using Bluetooth.
Weirdly, the 2015 MacBook Pro also has the 3D Touch feature, but it originally came with Yosemite. The truly cool thing about 3D Touch is that you can actually control whether or not the clicking sound is made, and whether or not multiple levels are in effect. It is truly mind-blowing to press on the trackpad while it is off, then while it is on, and then while “Silent clicking” is in effect; the entire haptic experience of the thing is simulated using a motor that produces the vibrations at each level and with the necessary oomph as the trackpad is squeezed. Amazing. For the first hour, I just played with it, trying to understand how the simulation could be so utterly perfect. I had a really hard time of it, too, because it really was perfect. -- The following information is important for all members of the Mac Visionaries list.
