OK, so it looks like com.apple.speech.speechsynthesisd deadlocks when this happens.
Anyone else want to try deliberately reproducing this, and then, using Terminal, try “sudo killall -9 com.apple.speech.speechsynthesisd”? You should find that it comes back again shortly after you execute that command. (Please don’t do that if you aren’t comfortable playing with dangerous chemicals or fire.
