The positive benefit of allowing DVD player to run at least once when a disc is inserted is that drive authentication is performed. Once the drive has authenticated the disc, the encrypted sectors will come straight off without any read failures. You can then invoke your favourite ripper (vobcopy, in my case) to read and decrypt the blocks. Of course you don’t really need this just for the decryption; the DeCSS algorithm is now well-implemented and fast, but it’s one more thing to bear in mind if you wish to expedite the ripping process.
